It takes place some time in the future when mankind has entered a dark age - due to what Ayn Rand viewed as the evils of socialism.

Ayn Rand, a Russian emigre, used her books to attack the Soviet regime - its despotism, anti-individualism and its inept central planning of the economy and society. These themes are followed through in Rand's later books - 'The Fountainhead' and 'Atlas Shrugged'.
