The Benefactress (Free Audio Book)

The Benefactress by Elizabeth von Arnim- A free audiobook

Read by Librivox

Elizabeth von Arnim helped pave the way for strong female characters in fiction, The Benefactress is one such example and is well written and beautifully narrated as well.

In this free audiobook adaptation of von Arnim’s novel, we follow the life of Anna Estcourt. A strong-willed, beautiful yet poor woman who lives with her brother and infuriating wife. Anna believes in herself and wants to set out to prove that he does not need a man to sweep her off her feet. Turning down all marriage proposals, she continues to search for her true happiness. Everything changed when one day, her mother’s brother, Joachim, left all his wealth to her.

She hurries off to her new home in Germany, excited to start a new life as an independent woman. While the first few months were a bit rocky when it comes to her experiences with the locals, she soon proves herself to them. Her aim now is to open her humble abode to other women in the town looking for a place to be themselves. This, however, proved to be a rather daunting task both physically and emotionally. Fortunately, a blossoming friendship with Axe Lohm appears to be the help she needs. Will this friendship develop into something more?

Anna Escourt’s tale is one filled with humor and romance. It is a great love story that is even made better by Helen Taylor’s spot-on narration.
