Hacker Mom Audio Book Summary:

Beck Taylor is your ordinary stay at home mom. She has her hands full with her loveable four year old son, a career driven and busy husband, competitive playgroup moms and a sister who keeps reminding her of her dream of fighting for social justice, a dream she just can’t follow through now. Even with a seemingly happy life, Beck feels that something is amiss; maybe her dream of becoming a crusader for truth and justice still bothers her. Be careful what you wish for though, when Becky finds a disc that contains damaging information about a megabank she uses this to become what she always dreamed of.

She contacts one of the most controversial websites and exposes the secrets of the top brass to the world. However, it seems that she received more than she bargained for as the FBI closes in on her and she slowly realizes the hidden motivation of the head of the website. If she continues further into this world of a double life she might find herself in more danger than she could handle.

One reason to listen:

Hacker Mom shows the dangers of being a whistleblower but also shows why they are necessary. Austen Rachlis creates a very likeable protagonist that has been given the most powerful weapon of all: information.

Reactions:

“What a fun and addicting glimpse behind the curtain into the world of wikileaks and hacker conventions – through the eyes of a very relatable suburban mom who’s just stumbled into way more than she bargained for. I love this kind of fiction – the characters make you laugh and the plot races forward, and without even realizing it you grown just a little smarter about a timely and controversial topic.” – Kate Buhrmaster

“I liked how the author put us in the middle of action, yet simultaneously was able to seamlessly give us insights into characters’ emotional states and histories, particularly the protagonist, Becky. The tale is vividly told and feels very timely considering WikiLeaks and the and the financial collapse across the world.” – Brennan Parks

“I have now read all the installments, and overall I liked “Hacker Mom” a lot. It didn’t go where I thought it would, which is fine. The ending seemed a bit sudden and forced to me, but the story became more complex as it went along and it remained interesting to the end.” – S. Lionel

“The hacker stereotypes are clearly played up for a non-techie audience. This might be a fun read for someone who isn’t into tech and doesn’t mind typos. I’m a geek, and the DEFCON / hacker angle is what drew me in…but it turns out I’m the exact wrong audience for this book.” – Justin Cardinal

“The story was fun, even if the details were muddled and the plot holes were apparent. I could nitpick some of the fanciful hacking that took place, but I really enjoyed it, and I hope the author goes on to tell the further adventures of BadMamma — or even take this series and write a proper novel about it.” – Craig M. Kelley
