New Grub Street by George Gissing – A free audiobook

Narrated by Librivox Group

This is the free audiobook edition of the novel New Grub Street written by George Gissing. The novel is in fact a critique about the literary industry that Gissing himself has experienced firsthand during his career as an author. The Grub Street referred to in the title is an actual London street during the 18th century that became notorious for being the center of hack literature. While Gissing was not able to actually walk the streets of this infamous place in literary London, he did use it as the setting for his own work that reflects what it was like for a writer during that time.

The two main characters of New Grub Street is a pair of writers. The first, Edwin Reardon, is a shy and mindful novelist with some latent talent but has difficulty in finding success. The other side of the coin is young journalist by the name of Jasper Milvain. Milvain is a hard working individual but is quite cynical and lacks principle when it comes to writing.

This free audiobook is read by various performers from Librivox and is an interesting case study of two polar opposite characters that are trying to grasp similar goals.
