Passing by Nella Larsen – A free audiobook

Narrated by Elizabeth Klett

Nella Larsens was one of the most prominent writers that pushed the issue of race and gender discrimination into the forefront. Passing is her second novel that centers on these issues and was published in 1929. The story focuses on two friends and their turbulent relationship with each other being two mixed race women in a time when discrimination was the norm.

One of women, Irene Redfield marries a black man and lives in Harlem, while her friend, Clare Kendry, marries a bigot and racist white man. As Clare and Irene’s path converge once again after years of being apart, their current situations stir up painful questions about race, equality and friendship.

During the time of the books publishing, it was one of the most though provoking and eye opening novels about gender and race issues. This free audiobook is narrated by the ever talented Elizabeth Klett and is a highly recommended audiobook that can still resonate with readers of today.
