Nellie Bly was one of the first female journalists who made an outstanding career in the field of investigative journalism. Her book, Ten Days in a Madhouse, helped sparked public attention on the lives of patient within mental health asylums. In order to learn more about the living conditions Nellie Bly took it upon her to investigate Blackwell’s Island Insane Asylum by having herself committed into the facility.

During the 10 days she stayed within the mental asylum she witnessed the inhumane treatment of patients by the staff. After releasing her book about her experiences within the asylum more money was allocated to mental health care study and care.
