The Last Mile Audio Book Summary:

When a convicted murderer is suddenly granted reprieve mere hours before his execution due to the fact that another man came forward to confess to the crime, FBI special task force Amos Decker takes interest in the case due to how close it reflects what happened to him in the past.

Melvin Mars was convicted of murdering his parents 20 years ago and during the final hours before he is executed another man came to the police to confess that he did the heinous crime two decades ago. Decker felt an eerie connection to Mars as they both appear to have gone through similar tragedies in life. They both had a promising future career in football that was cut short due to unforeseen and tragic events. Both were cleared of the charges when another person came forward to confess.

However, why did this new suspect choose only now to come out and confess? If he is the real murderer what pushed him to confess now? Is what this suspect claim even true?

Decker’s instincts proved to be true when a member of his team suddenly disappears during an investigation of the case and it appears there is something more sinister afoot behind the shadows pulling the strings. Now it is a race against time to discover the truth as Decker must use all his skills to get to the bottom of this conspiracy.

“While the first 85% (as marked on my Kindle) were your typical Baldacci the last 15% of the book felt extremely rushed: we spent a lot of time building the back story then all of a sudden the bus turned into a sports car and it was over with several unanswered questions and an open-ended finish.” – Bibliophile
