A HORSE’S TALE by MARK TWAIN – A free audiobook
A Horse’s Tale is a novel written by Mark Twain. The story revolves around different casts of characters but all of which center around Soldier Boy, a war horse in the fictional outpost of the U.S. 7th Cavalry. The audiobook goes through various characters’ point of view of their lives and the story of Soldier Boy, Cathy and the numerous soldiers of the 7th Cavalry. Mark Twain once again perfectly blends together the reality of life with some lighthearted humor that gives the bleak notion of a war torn land some much needed color.
The origin of this story is in fact from a request by actress Minnie Maddern Fiske to Mark Twain about helping stop the practice of bullfighting, hence, the brutal and graphic depiction in the story of a bullfight that is detailed in horrific fashion. The character of Cathy Alison is widely believed to be based on Mark Twain’s daughter Susy Clemens who died at the age of 24 due to spinal meningitis. A Horse’s Tale is a novel that is a personal story for Mark Twain. In this novel, he is able to tell a remarkable story that in itself is a message about the barbaric nature of certain traditions. It is also in this story that he immortalizes the memory of her daughter with Cathy Alison, a strong willed young woman who forms an amazing bond with a horse named Soldier Boy. This is another true masterpiece from one of literature’s greatest minds.
