Alan Turing: The Enigma Audio Book Summary:

Alan Turing was an integral part of the Allies during World War 2 against the Nazis. Not only was he able to save Allied soldiers lives, he also invented the first computer and artificial intelligence and even predicted the gay liberation by decades. However, Turing’s life was a tragic one which ended in 1954 when he committed suicide at the age of 41.

This memoir of one of history’s most important inventor tackles the gripping story of Turing’s life from his successful ventures in mathematics, computer and cryptography to his public persecution for being a homosexual which led to his suicide. This audiobook covers Turing’s time when coined the concept of a universal machine which he took a step further by presenting his own electronic design in 1945. The memoir will also delve into Turing’s participation and leading role in breaking the German Enigma ciphers during World War 2 which led to a critical victory of the Allies in the Atlantic Theater.

With all of his efforts and service, in the end, Turing was stripped of everything he worked so hard for because of trying to live an honest life in a time and in a society where homosexuality is viewed as a crime.

One reason to listen:

This is an extremely relevant memoir about the unfair persecution of a man that did nothing wrong except being honest with himself. This is a pivotal biography that puts the spotlight on a subject that is still a sensitive issue today.

Reactions:

“Without this book, the real Alan Turing might fade into obscurity or at least the easy caricature of an eccentric British mathematician. Clearly, I rate this one of the most important books I’ve ever read.” – Thomas D. Jennings

“This is a book that will fascinate readers interested in the history of the computer, in the story of how the German submarine fleet threatening to strangle England was defeated, and in the tragic story of the persecution for his sex life of a man who should have been prized as a national hero.” – Martin D. Davis

“It is fascinating reading and certainly not for the faint of heart as there’s so much math/science info/formulas interwoven throughout the pages. If you’re into that, then this is the book for you. It does have a lot on Alan’s growing up years, so I skip the math/science details and concentrate on the personal aspects.” – Sheila Bacon

“An excellent biography if a bit long winded would have been helped by skilful editing? The film is disappointing in how it portrays Turing.” – John Coghlan
