Narrated by Esther

An Antarctic Mystery is Jules Verne’s response to The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket by Edgar Allan Poe. As with Poe’s novel, An Antarctic Mystery is written from the point of view of the protagonist on his travels along the Kerguelen Islands aboard the ship, Halbrane. The story is set about eleven years after the events of The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym while the book was published one year after Poe’s.

The narrator of the story is a wealthy American named Jeorling who is fascinated with the study of unique flora and fauna that are exclusive to the Kerguelen Islands. After a long period of stay in the islands, Jeorling is now looking for a way back home to America and has found the answer to his dilemma aboard the Halbrane which is on its way back as well. He is able to come in to terms with reluctant Captain Len Guy to board the ship back home. However, this simple voyage is turned upside down when they found a stray iceberg with a dead body on top. Hauling the body into their ship they found a note that tells of the tragic voyage of the crew of the ship Jane. The letter also states that there are still survivors left and it is up to Halbrane to find these survivors and get them to safety. But things are not always as the appear.
