An International Episode is a novella written by Henry James and was first published in 1892 that featured illustrations from artist H.W. McVickar. This short story centers on Percy Beaumont and his cousin Lord Lambeth as they arrive in New York City for a business venture in the middle summer. The fast paced lifestyle of New York combined with the blistering heat seemed too much for the two and they immediately feel overwhelmed. Once they meet Mr. Westgate who sees that both men are extremely uncomfortable with this type of weather, he invites them to his manor on Newgate which he says has a more accommodating temperature.

Now in Newport, the two socialize with the people there and this is where Lord Lambeth meets Bessie. Bessie has in fact been following Lord Lambeth for quite some time as she is looking for a rich man to marry. They seem to be at odds with each other at first, but soon found themselves genuinely fond of each other to the disapproval of the Lambeth’s friends and family as they see Bessie as a fortune hunter only wanting Lambeth’s riches. The novel also critiques the social class system and the unfair and unequal treatment of individuals from varying spectrum.
