An Old Fashioned Girl is a novel by Louisa May Alcott that was first serialized in the magazine Merry’s Museum between July and August on 1869. The story centers on a 14 year old country girl named Polly Milton as she visits her wealthy cousin Fanny Shaw in the city for the first time. As expected, the grandiose and hectic lifestyle of the city quickly overwhelms young Polly as she is accustomed to the simple country life. Polly initially had difficulty socializing with the people in the city, even Fanny finds Polly’s ways a bit unusual. Fanny’s friends reject her and her family members are quite disconcerted with her personality.
However, Polly’s warmth and kindness slowly wins over everyone around her and maybe it is high time for her to teach them some old fashioned lessons and values. Six years later, Polly will once again venture into the city but this time to realize her dream of becoming a music teacher. She will discover the hardships of this profession which will test her mettle. During this time, Polly would also find out that the Shaw’s are nearing bankruptcy and it is once again time for her to step in and show them that material effects are not really essential when it comes to having a happy and content family.
