And So They Were Married is a culturally relevant novel by Florence Morse Kingsley and was initially published by Dodd, Mead and Company in 1908. It tells the story of Elizabeth North, a young woman who is engaged to be married but is pushed by her social climbing friends to plan a wedding that she clearly cannot afford. One of her friend, Evelyn Tripp, even convinces her that having a fashionable and extremely expensive lifestyle is vital which Elizabeth seemingly agrees which then put a strain on her life as she quickly falls into debt just so that she can acquire the approval of her so-called friends.
Fortunately for Elizabeth North, her husband and her grandmother are by her side throughout and helps her come into her senses in the fact that expensive clothes and lavish lifestyle does not equate happiness. Slowly, Elizabeth sees the error of her ways and with the help of her husband and grandmother she picks herself up and clears her debt. This is a novel that tackles one of societies’ most dangerous vices and shows the problems that living beyond your means can develop which would inevitably leave you with nothing. This novel which was published a century ago is still a relevant issue today and is something that people should listen to. Michele Eaton does a fantastic job of narrating this free audiobook as she encapsulates the vulnerability of Elizabeth North that will have you caring for the character even with all her wrong decisions.
