Australia Felix by Henry Handel Richardson (Free Audio Book)
Australia Felix by Henry Handel Richardson – A free audiobook
Narrated by Tabithat
Australia Felix is the first in the trilogy of Henry Handel Richardson’s “The Fortunes of Richard Mahony” and thus introduces us to the complex life and personality of the Richard Mahony. Richard Mahony is a highly talented doctor trained in Edinburgh who goes to Ballarat during the gold rush of the 1850’s to test his fortunes in this endeavor. When he arrives, he first sets up a shop but later on he gets married and returns to being a doctor when his luck does not turn to his favor when it comes to gold mining.
Mahony’s story is interwoven with that of his wife’s brothers and sisters. Their marriage has been a fruitful one and even though he once again found success as a doctor in the colony he feels that something is amiss and decides to return to Britain. The character of Richard Mahony is that of an ill-tempered and impatient man that is said to be based on Henry Handel Richardson’s own father. Mahony’s life is further delved into in the next two books but Australia Felix is a well written and interesting enough book that it can stand on its own. The narrator, Tabithat, quickly pulls you into what kind of a person Mahony is and drives this free audiobook edition with the complexity of the character.
