It was first published in 1933 and is considered one of the more controversial books of that era as it details the story of the protagonist, a young man, who comes to terms with his homosexuality in a time when society shuns the people who chose a different lifestyle that is not within the perception of normalcy. Better Angel is the first to truly push the issue of the unfair treatment of homosexuals in society.

The issue of homosexuality is further explored in the story. This is one of the first American novels about being gay that showed it in a positive light and not something that should be spurned or rejected. Richard Meeker is commended as the first to truly take a look at homosexuality and the negative image they receive from the public that is nowhere near justified.
