Candide by Voltaire – A free audiobook

Narrated by Ted Delorme

Candide or “Optimism” was a novel written by renowned philosopher Voltaire and was published in 1759. This is the free audiobook edition of the novel. An interesting fact about this novel was that Voltaire never truly openly admitted to writing Candide. The book was signed under the pseudonym of Monsieur le docteur Ralph, which translates to Mister Doctor Ralph. The novel satirizes the naiveté philosophical outlook by Gottfried Leibniz in which he states that “All is best in this, the best of all possible worlds” even after witnessing numerous horrors of the 18th century.

The story focuses on Candide, a student of Pangloss (loosely based on Gottfried Leibniz) and his adventures as he goes through the trials of life. Even after several misfortunes, he clings to the philosophy taught to him but slowly feels his belief developing cracks. Will Candide stubbornly hold on to his belief of blind optimism or will he let go of what is basically a naïve way to look at the world.
