Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania Audio Book Summary:

A luxury liner sets off from New York on May 1, 1915 towards Liverpool. It carries a record number of children passengers and the atmosphere within the liner is a tense one. The reason for anxiety is the fact that just months ago Germany declared the seas around Britain to be a war zone. U-Boats terrorized these waters and attacked all military boats with such ferocity and quickness that the most of the area has been under German control.

The name of the luxury liner is the Lusitania and her captain was William Thomas Turner. Captain Turner had faith in the gentlemanly laws of warfare that forbid the attack on any civilian ship. Moreover, he trusted that the Lusitania can outrun any threat that they may encounter.

On the other side is Walther Schwieger, the captain of the Unterseeboot-20. He has been tasked to eliminate any ship that passes through these waters whether they are military or civilian. Hot on Schwieger’s U-Boat is the British Intelligence but has not made any action to take the threat out. Now, The U-20 and the Lusitania are on a head on collision as they both travel to Liverpool.

This audiobook details the events that transpired during this dark episode in American history and how it steered America into the road to war.

One reason to listen:

Dead Wake is an important part of history as it details how this event effectively changed the course of history by bringing in America into one of the deadliest war in history.

Reactions:

“All in all, DEAD WAKE is a horrifying story, full of grief and tragedy. The accounts of families struggling to survive after the attack are heart-breaking. Erik Larson does an excellent job at painting this terrible picture, as well as explaining the events surrounding WWI. This book is well-researched and supported by extensive references, providing sources for the main portion of the book.” – Bassocantor

“Erik Larson can never disappoint. Whether one reads a great deal about WWI history, maritime disasters, or early 1900s international politics, there is something new to be learned in DEAD WAKE. For those who have read very little about the Lusitania, this book is an excellent starting point.” – IsolaBlue

“By and large, Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania by Erik Larson is insightful and offers a new comprehension of a major tragedy that has shaken the world. While the book is not a fun read, nevertheless, there are some fun moments too with the widowed U.S. president, Woodrow Wilson, distracted by a new found love that diverts his attention from world affairs. ”– The GreatReads

“The u-boat chapters hold the most drama, but after a while even they are a bit boring: many ships are hit, some get away. Larson might better have created drama through the multiple trials that tried to blame Captain Turner for the sinking. ” – Joe Da Rold

“Even though you know how the story ends it’s hard to put the book down. Erik Larson makes every page come alive with the people involved, what happened to them, how it came about, the history surrounding the events described” – Doris Bryant Potter
