Egg and Spoon revolves around the story of young Elena Rudina. She lives in a quiet, rustic and impoverished town in a Russian countryside. Life for young Elena had been tough. Her father is dead, her brothers have been drafted into the Tsar’s army and are now living under a wealthy landowner as servants and her mother is currently sick and dying. Scrounging up food for the day is tough and Elena is doing everything she can so that she and her mother survive for another day.
Everything changes when a train arrives in the village. This train however, was different from all the others that have passed through their sleepy little town. This one is filled with treasure and food. Aboard is a wealthy and noble family who is about to meet the Tsar in St. Petersburg. Along with the family is another girl, about Elena’s age, named Ekaterina. Once Elena and Ekaterina’s path collides, the adventure begins. In a tale of mistaken identity, a mysterious monk in a tower, a prince with quest and a mythical witch from Russian folklore; Elena will have a chance to turn her family’s fortune around.

Reactions:
“The novel is masterfully written and like many classics incorporates layers of reference, social, literary and artistic. It is a book of great depth which can be read on many levels. While appropriate for children and adults, his use of language would be a stretch for younger readers. I won’t spoil the story by attempting a reconstruction. Read it for yourself!” – E. Swope

“Turns out it’s more a children’s story for grown-ups. In 2013 in an interview with Geek’s Guide to the Galaxy, Maguire says the following of his upcoming EGG AND SPOON: “It’s really a meditation on some things we are facing right now in dystopian 2013. Like the threat of climate change, floods and droughts and weather that won’t sit in the month in which it belongs and the implications for human suffering and the human need to begin to find new ways to share resources.” – OLT

“Gregory Maguire is a genius, and his first foray into Young Adult literature doesn’t disappoint. Full to the brim with mistaken identity and coming of age antics, the story is also steeped in both Russian Folklore and History. Maguire proves that he can twist any story (including actual history) to fit his fancy in this raucously fun tale that you won’t be able to put down.” – Caitlin

“I lost faith in Maguire after his Wicked series lost steam by book 3 or 4 but this book re-established him as one of the most clever and entertaining authors I’ve ever read. Every page had a quotable quote and I raced through faster than I’ve read a book in years. A well-deserved A+++ with this one.” – Rebecca L. Fisk

“Despite its flaws, Egg and Spoon is worth reading. It provides an intriguing introduction to Russian folklore that could spark a reader’s interest in other stories. It may, however, lack enough excitement to keep younger readers interested.” – Rane
