Farewell by Honoré de Balzac – A free audiobook

Narrated by Martin Geeson

Balzac crafted a haunting and tragic novella with Farewell. In this 19th century literature telling the tale of a woman who is a prisoner of her own madness, she is mostly silent but sometimes she is heard chanting eerily in her chamber. In this purgatory also lies one Mrs. Rochester who walks the wings, the Lady of Shalott desperately trying to break her illusion of the world as she waits for a glimpse of the true world outside these walls.

Another story delves the tale of two friends who while hunting in the thick forest meets a strange woman is confined to a crumbling manor in the middle of the forest. What mysteries does this woman hold? In the middle of these web of stories is the tragic retreat of Napoleon’s Army during the war of 1812 wherein a woman is separated from her lover who is a soldier during this tumultuous time.

This free audiobook perfectly captures the chaos of the human mind and how it can unravel and break from sheer anguish. This free audiobook is read by Martin Geeson and is available for download in Librivox.
