 Borrowing a Match is a comic short story which appeard in one of his early short story collections - Literary Lapses.

Stephen Leacock was born in England but moved to Canada with his family at the age of six. He went to a private school in Toronto, became a school teacher then through part-time studies received a doctorate at the University of Chicago.

His short stories and novels, written to supplement his income, eventually became his main source of income. Not surprising as apparently by 1911 he was better known than Canada itself!
