Gray Mountain Audio Book Summary:

Samantha Kofer’s life has never been this good. Her career in a renowned Wall Street law firm is on the rise, that is, until recession hits and her career crumbles right in front of her eyes. However, Samantha is part of a short list of associates that are given a chance to get their careers back on track. But to achieve this she has to work for a year without pay at a legal aid clinic in the middle of nowhere and having accomplished that only guarantees a “chance” that she will be able to get her old job back.

In a matter of days Samantha’s life turned from living in a high rise apartment in the heart of New York into living in Brady, Virginia with a population of 2,200 and somewhere she has only read about. She then meets Mattie Wyatt, the head of the town’s legal aid clinic, to teach her how life in the real world works. For the first time in her career, Samantha finally finds herself doing real legal work for people who actually need them and it is more difficult than she had imagined. Local residents are also not so happy to have a big time city lawyer in their midst and slowly Samantha will also discover that like most small towns, Brady hides its own fair share of secrets.

Soon she gets assigned to the dangerous world of coal mining where rules are not guaranteed as well as safety. Within just a couple of weeks, Samantha finds herself entangled in a case that went from dangerous to deadly.

Reactions:

“Grisham makes his characters very real and the plight of the miners and the realities of their lives are heart breaking. The story delves into small town politics and of course, a murder to solve. The mystery is a minor portion of the story; the main thrust is coal mining. I hope this novel by Grisham will shame society to act against the destruction of the mountains and rivers by strip mining or enforce or enact stricter regulations. Catherine Taber narrated the story.” – Jean

“I was prompted to write this review to counter the first couple of inexplicable one- and two-star denouncements of this book as uninteresting “chick lit.” It is, quite simply, a well-told and well-written story about believable people and actual legal and social issues. Yeah, it’s not the verbal equivalent of Terminator, and spends more time talking about thoughts and emotions than guns and ammo. But chick lit it isn’t, nor is it anything like a one-star book. If you like Grisham, legal thrillers, well-developed characters and a story that deepens understanding of legal issues most of us our fortunate enough to never see, invest a credit!” – C. Rogers

“This book brought to light a great deal about coal mining that I was not aware of. I lived in West Virginia in the early 50’s and buried my Grandmother there in 1976. To think that some of those beautiful mountains no longer exist because the coal industry does not do its job in reclamation, make my heart ache.” – Bessie Hawley-Crissman

“The story line was redundant. I felt like I was listening to an educational series on Coal Miners, Black Lung and poverty in Virginia. The story line didn’t leave you excited to get back to the book and find out what happened next.I would listen to John Grisham; he has a lot of great books. This book felt like a personal agenda he wanted to publicize.” – Leah

“This is the first John Grisham book I couldn’t finish. I’ve read and loved them all but I just couldn’t get into this one. The message of the book is Important but I didn’t like the characters much. The town the story takes place in is very depressing (why would anyone want to live there… or visit their as a reader) Like many other reviewers I wasn’t as impressed with the reader. Don’t know why he has stopped using Michael Bech which was always the best for his books. Sure I know the main character was a woman but good male readers can handle that or there are loads of other female readers that would have been better suited for this project. I wanted to like this book and hope John’s next one is back to the style I love so much.” – Carl
