Harrington by Maria Edgeworth – A free audiobook

Narrated by Jenny Bradshaw and Lee Smalley

This is the free audiobook edition of the novel of the same name. Harrington tells the story of the titular character as he looks deep within his self to understand his true view about Jews. The story will start with Harrington’s very first experiences with Jews based on the stories that were told to him as a child by his maid, Simon, who is also a Jew. His anti-Semitism seems to have been caused by his parents who rewarded Harrington this unsavoury trait of his. However, his views are turned upside down when he started going to a public school. There he met a boy named Mowbray who is known for bullying and tormenting a Jewish peddler named Jacob. This slowly turned his views about Jews around which were further strengthened by an American Jew who moved to England named Berenice Montenero. Their meeting will then force Harrington to put his beliefs into perspective which may cause a rift within his own family.
