Havana Nocturne: How the Mob Owned Cuba… and then Lost it to the Revolution Audio Book Summary:

Havana Nocturne is an opening account of the time when Havana was ran by organized crime and corruption as well as the glitz and glamour of the nightlife. However, all things must come to an end and the mafia’s hold on Havana was cut off thanks to the Cuban Revolution that changed Havana forever. T.J. English compiles documents that further sheds light to shadowy transactions during the mob’s height of power in Havana. This audiobook also brings about long buried information including interviews from surviving key players of era when Havana was the nest of the mafia. Havana Nocturnes paints a different picture of the past glamorous Havana nightlife and shows it for what it truly is, a deadly playground of powerful and dangerous mob bosses with connections to the island’s dictator President Batista.

This audiobook will detail the rise and eventual fall of the mob empire when their plans collided with revolutionary Fidel Castro and Che Guevara as their idealism and cultures clash in a battle to overthrow the corrupt government. T.J. English is able to capture not only the dazzle of Havana but also its grime.

One reason to listen:

Havana Nocturne is an essential part of American crime history and is an interesting listen for its in depth detailing of the rise and fall of organized crime in a foreign land.

Reactions:

“This book tells the story of how the mob built and lost the casinos in Havana. I downloaded the volume because I knew nothing about the topic and was well rewarded for the effort. The methods used by the mob to build their operations in Cuba and related activities in Las Vegas are told. The characters appear as very real. This is not a pro-Castro or anti-mob book. It is just a great, informative tome.” – Roy

“Anyway, it was a slow trek through the story because none of the politics, or the mob relations or the characters involved was familiar to me. But it was enlightening in how it explained the background to the current US-Cuba relations.” – Crazybatcow

“The narrator was all right, but his lousy pronunciation of Spanish terms irritated me enough to reduce my rating by another star. Couldn’t they get a bilingual narrator for a book so steeped in Spanish language?” – Lila

“Havana Nocturne is a must read for anyone interested in the 1950s mafia expansion into Cuba. As a great admirer of Meyer Lansky, this book provides valuable insight into his cunning business practices and how the “Little Man” successfully led the Havana Mob. I found myself looking forward to my morning and afternoon commutes just so I could check-in on Lansky and his cohorts.” – Jedd
