Journey from this World to the Next by Henry Fielding – A free audiobook
Narrated by Denny Sayers and Elizabeth Klett
Journey from this World to the Next was written by Henry Fielding, one of England’s top satirist that takes a different look into what happens in the afterlife. The novel is formatted in a style that gives it the appearance of being written as an actual account of a recently deceased.
The very first sentence has the narrator dying and it gets harder from there. He found it difficult to leave his mortal body as both eyes and mouth are closed which apparently didn’t allow for his soul to easily pass. After getting through that ordeal, the spirit then joins a group of other recently departed on a phantom coach journey towards the afterlife as they await judgment at the gates. There they will enter Heaven or get thrown into the pits of Hell.
An interesting character that they meet is the soul of Emperor Julian who gets thrown back into the world of the living until he gets to live right. This character gives a twist to the belief of the afterlife as he is not good enough to enter Heaven but not exactly bad enough to go to Hell. So, he gets to go back to the world of the living until he finally gets his life right.
