Servants of the Shard: Forgotten Realms: The Sellsword Book 1 Audio Book Summary:

The epic fantasy series ‘Forgotten Realms’ continues to expand the storyline of The Assassins. Artemis Entreri finds that while he has gained complete control of Calimport, his sponsors, the dark elves are becoming more ambitious and brazen even when he asked them to be cautious. This path will undoubtedly put him in the same predicament that his arch enemy was before him and it will leave him in a place where someone like Artemis Entreri will not be welcome in.

In the second story, The Drow, another villainous character takes center stage: Jarlaxle. It picks up after Jarlaxle ascends the Menzoberranzan now fueled with evil intent. The Crystal Shard continues to influence his mind to the point where even the Drow agents that accompanied him become fearful. As mutiny sparks when Bregan D’aerthe turns against Jarlaxle, he finds that his only hope for survival is with the man he came to enslave.

One reason to listen:

Forgotten Realms is rich in its own history and Servants of the Shards offer a unique look wherein the protagonist of the stories are not your typical heroic figures but their complete opposites. A highly interesting and exciting dark fantasy.

Reactions:

“Plot-wise, this is also one of Salvatore’s best…deliberate and masterful, he wends his way through a story that, I think, he has long wanted to tell…to himself! No haphazard jabs into the dark for this work–Salvatore is the master bard, fully in control of the tale from beginning to end.
To the fan, this is classic Salvatore. To the fantasy enthusiast, this is one of the few good works coming out of TSR.” – Ubermensche

“I was very excited about the release of this book. It’s is not very often that one gets to read a book where the villains are the main characters of the book. Salvatore worked wonders with these characters. It was exciting to watch as each character tried to out manuever the other with layers upon layers of deception. We really saw the motivations of the assassin Artemis Entreri as well as the mercenary leader, Jarlaxle. I chuckled all throughout the book, which was surprising when reading about a character such as Artemis Entreri. The ending of the book was superb and has truly has made me anxious for the next book involving these two characters. Lets hope that I won’t have to wait too long…..” – Billy Wendln

“The brilliance in this novel can be summarized by the revalation that by the end, Salvatore has you rooting and cheering on two of the most cold hearted and ruthless killers in Faerun. Their development, both as individual characters and as partners, in this book far surpasses even the silent blade, and the reader is even given a few glimpses into the underlying psyche of both characters. A very fun and refreshing read for any fan of Salvatore who has gotten a bit bored with the “drama” that had become Drizzt Do’Urden and misses the action from his adventures in the Underdark. Bottom line: Awsome fantasy novel.” – Dylan J. Pittman

“The ending is slightly anti-climactic (it’s exciting, but nowhere near finales like his Legacy of the Drow novels). One of the problems is that the means to destroy the Crystal Shard is so simple! It’s enough to create a good ending, but I was expecting something is little more grandiose (this is an artifact, afterall). It may sound like I’m ragging on this book, but I don’t want that to be the case. The story line is good, but the real star is Entreri.” – Lord Chimp

“I am not sure why no one else mentions this, but I first read this book in the Paths of Darkness compendium. Yes, maybe it is my own fault for not checking a little closer, but it seems a bit dubious that it would be included with the other series and then labeled as a different one by itself. The story itself is entertaining and it is nice to move away from the Icewind Dale characters to some a little darker and with ulterior motives. Just check to make sure you don’t already own this one before purchasing it!” – Anonymous
