Description
A Study in Scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is best known for being the debut adventure of Doyle’s world famous character, Sherlock Holmes. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle started developing the plot and characters in 1886 and had it published the very next year (1887). While this is the first time that Sherlock Holmes and his trustworthy friend Dr. John Watson appeared it still took a couple of years before popularity caught on. A Study in Scarlet drew minor public attention but it is still an amazing read if not to see the initial development of Sherlock Holmes.
The title is derived from a quote by Sherlock Holmes that their murder investigation is a “study in scarlet”. Meaning that a scarlet thread of murder is hidden within a tangle of misdirection and lies, and that it is their job to unravel and expose it.
