Spymaster: Startling Cold War Revelations of a Soviet KGB Chief Audio Book Summary:
During World War 2 and all throughout the Cold War thereafter, Sergey A. Kondrashev was one of the most prominent members of the KGB espionage division. He quickly rose through the ranks for his complete understanding of espionage and skills of manipulation in politics. He smoked out American and British defectors, recruited double agents and served as an officer of the East Berlin and Vienna KGB bureaus as well as getting assigned with highly confidential missions straight from the Kremlin.
In 1994, Kondrashev met ex-CIA Tennent H. Bagley. During the Cold War, Kondashev and Bagley were at opposite sides but have since formed a close friendship during their retirement. Kondashev went to Bagley for help in writing his memoirs. Spymaster is an eye opening peek into the world of spies during the Cold War. This is a time when the war was made in the shadows and the world is always at the brink of another major war. This is a memoir of how the major players in this game served their own countries but at the same time took measures to ensure that the worst case scenario will never happen.

Reactions:
“This book proves again and again to what extent the importance of intelligence was in those times and no serious historian writing about the Cold War would ignore this dimension. This is highly recommended for history professionals and espionage buffs alike.” – Paul Gelman

“Better than other true spy books, this one gave me the feel of being inside the enemy camp. In other works the KGB’s spy center seemed to me distant and mysterious, but here it becomes familiar ground. You almost feel like you’re walking the corridors of the Lubyanka.” – Drew David

“This book has been rated highly by early reviewers. This is a book like no other: it has lots of names of Cold War era KGB officials which will please those readers seeking more information about KGB spycraft methods and personnel.” – A Serious Reader In

“It was more information than I needed. I guess I thought it a bit boring after awhile, although I’m sure it wasn’t to those involved.” – Ruthesp

“But the book was still interesting overall in some chapters even though it was not organized as well as I would have liked. I recommend reading it along with the Book: “Berlin 1961″ by Frederick Kempe. A much more enjoyable book about the cold war issues faced by Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Khrushchev from 1959-1961.” – Terry Jenrich
