The Clan of the Cave Bear: Earth’s Children, Book 1 Audio Book Summary:

The Clan of the Cave Bear is the first of the Earth’s Children saga written by Jean M. Auel. It centers on the story of one woman’s journey in a world populated by magic and mysteries. This audiobook edition is read by the talented Sandra Burr.

Ayla is part of a tribe called the Clan of the Cave Bear. The story of her life revolves around the tribe’s life. We are introduced to their culture, their hunts and the giant totems that they worship. But Ayla is different from her family and the rest of the tribe. For you see, Ayla was found by the clan when she was just an infant and was raised by them even though she is completely different from everyone else.

To say that Ayla is different from the rest of the clan is an understatement. Her beauty is considered ugly by the rest, her mannerisms such as her ability to laugh, cry and speak is strange for her peers and her advanced intelligence makes her curious about the world and everything around her.

Ayla is in fact, a member of the “Others”. But even though her adoptive parents know this they still loved and cared for her like she is their own. But as she grows older, there are members of the clan, traditionalist, who wish to cast her out of the clan due to their fear and bigotry.

As the clan slowly tears itself apart by those who wish to cast out Ayla and those who protect her, she must make a decision that will change the world around her. This is her destiny and she must fight her way through the dangers of the outside world to carry it out. And so, Ayla’s journey takes her through a treacherous path and in doing so, breaks a forbidden taboo by the Clan of the Cave Bear.

One reason to listen:

This is a superb audiobook that is well acted and is filled with a mixture of fantasy and scientific fact that will sure to hook fans of the genre.

Reactions:

“I honestly cannot wait to start reading the next book. I am desperate to know what happens to Ayla…does she meet up with her people. Does she find a mate? I’ve read enough reviews to know some of the answers to my questions, but that doesn’t make me any less eager to read for myself.” – Crystal Starr Light

“I did the unabridged audiobook which included 14 tapes of prehistoric immersion into the culture of the clan. This is a very satisfying, very informative, very revealing and very thought-provoking audiobook.” – A Customer

“I’d definitely recommend this book to anyone. The only complaint I have about this is Ayla’s ingenuity. She manages to come up with so many new ideas, ones that would be revolutionary even by Cro-Magnon standards, that it didn’t seem realistic.” – Keonie

“I just read this book again – maybe the 27th time? And every time I become totally engrossed. The big thing is the character of Ayla, strong, intelligent, courageous and yet so human.” – Mari

“Despite all of her faults as a writer, Auel is clearly a knowledgeable person, and even her digressions don’t fail to carry some interest. Her prose, if not sophisticated, is usually clear, even if it does occasionally feel like reading a text book when she wanders too far from the story, or if she renders most of her characters faceless.” – Kyle M.
