The Golem and the Jinni Audio Book Summary:
The Golem and the Jinni is Helene Wecker’s amazing first novel and delivers a fantastic new take on mythical creatures and the fantasy genre. The story revolves around the two titular beings, a golem and a jinni. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay brought to life by man through magic. However, tough times are ahead of the newborn creature as her master dies at sea while they were on a voyage to Poland. Later on, she finds herself drifting to an unfamiliar landscape, New York City. Somewhere in the heart of New York a Jinni is accidentally released from his copper flask prison in a Lower Manhattan Shop by a tinsmith. Ahmad is a Jinni, a being born of fire in the blistering Syrian Desert.
Lost in a foreign world, the two struggle to try and find their place and soon find themselves in a small community of immigrants. As their path eventually meets, the two became quick friends and soon found a home within this community of outcasts. Finding a home and the closest thing to a family, all seems well for the two as they mask their true self. However, something malevolent approaches and threatens their existence. They will be forced to make a decision that will affect their lives and everything they hold dear.
One reason to listen:
This is one of the best new fantasy novels today that weaves in the fantastical with realism in heartfelt story that tackles race and society.

Reactions:
“In every instance that her tale could be ordinary, Ms. Wecker makes it extraordinary. The lush cultures, heritage, and history depicted so beautifully are merely the jumping off point for a dazzlingly inventive fantasy. Where did this writer come from, and how is it possible that this accomplished work is her debut? It is sure to be one of the literary highlights of the year!” – Susan Tunis

“Wecker’s narrative is very adult, but often reads like a childhood fable in structure. There are no medieval dragons and wizards, but more of a delightful bit of cultural magic.” – Jason Golomb

“The ending of the book is completely satisfying, just like the rest of the book. Wecker left the door ajar that there could be a follow-up with these characters if the book is as wildly successful as I hope and believe the book could/ will be.” – Julia Walter

“It took me a while to get in to it, and the ending was…well, I’ll won’t spoil it but it was pretty predictable.” – Amahel

“In any case, the story is interesting enough that I didn’t complain about how slowly it moved, but went along for a ride. That’s a great accomplishment in itself, which means that I will be looking for future novels by Wecker. Recommended.” – Piaw Na
