Terry Lennox is in a heap of trouble when his millionaire wife is dead and with no one else connected to the crime scene, he knows that he will be the primary suspect. Scared, he runs away from LA and asked his friend Philip Marlowe, Private Investigator, for help. Marlowe never turns back someone down on their luck and Lennox is a close friend so he helps him get away so that they can collect their wits. Unfortunately, Marlowe hears that Lennox committed suicide in Mexico and this is when events spiral out of control.

Philip Marlowe believes that Lennox is innocent and that someone is behind the crime that cost the life of Lennox and his wife. But who is the culprit behind the curtain? Los Angeles’ Idle Valley has the answers and Philip Marlowe must uncover the truth before the body count rises up.

Reactions:

“Call it pulp if you like, and say that Hammett outsold him if you must, but for my money, Chandler had more style than anyone else who’s ever tackled the genre. Marlowe remains one of the best, most complete and most enjoyable creations of literature that I have ever found, and I only wish that Chandler had left us more of him.” – Ivan Askwith

“I first read “The Long Goodbye” in 1976, before I had read any other Raymond Chandler novels. The book practically set off an explosion in my brain — I have been fascinated by Chandler ever since. No other book by Chandler matches this one’s emotional tone.” – Amazon Customer

“The Long Goodbye is a terrific example of the genre; it’s also a meditation on our culture and our failings and the impossibility of heroism in the modern world. It’s no stretch to say the Chandler sought to re-create Eliot’s Wasteland for mass consumption, concealed in the trappings of pulp fiction. Here he succeeds.” – Thomas Plotkin

“Rereading The Long Goodbye I was struck by the ending, which drags on and on and on for some 50 pages, with every layer of the onion peeled back and every small detail of the solution detailed, with surprises and twists along the way. But it’s still an awkward and sometimes boring way to end what otherwise is a fast-paced novel.” – “Lan” the Answer Man

“Wheels within wheels, a complex plot by a master storyteller. This was enjoyable but went a bit too long for my taste. The reveal at the end was overwhelmed by wordiness.” – Wayne “DriverPhil”
