The Phantom of the Opera Audio Book Summary:

Within the walls of the great Paris opera there have been whispers of a terror that stalks the performers within the theatre. All of these tales where believed to be nothing more than legend and old wives tale, that is until the disappearance of one of the operas most popular performers, Christine. Christine disappeared moments after her much vaunted performance and all fingers point to the infamous Phantom of the Opera as the culprit. Now, investigators are taking this urban legend seriously as a number of unexplained accidents happen inside the cathedral-like opera theatre. The phantom lurks within the walls and haunts the shadowy hallways of the theatre. Can he be stopped before he strikes once again and will Christine be able to escape his sinister grasp?

One reason to listen:

The Phantom of the Opera is a classic suspense mystery tale that will surely satiate fans of this genre’s hunger for the macabre.

Reactions:

“If your only exposure to Phantom of the Opera has been either Weber’s Phantom or any of the other movies made based on this story, you must read (or listen to) this book. If you’ve never been exposed to any version of the Phantom, you must read this book. It is Beauty and the Beast set in an opera house. In the end, the only thing that can defeat evil is love.” – Sarah

“I was quite impressed by this book. I did not know that this was a book and was eager to listen to the full unabridged story. The story was quite fascinating and I was eager to listen straight through without stopping. The narrator Ralph Cosham did a good job narrating the story. He has a nice clear voice and was able to make the different characters stand out from each other. I really enjoyed this title and would recommend it to others.” – Miriam

“I liked the reading of this title so much more than then one narrated by Barrett Whitener, which seemed dry and forced. Ralph Cosham infused the story with more emotion which lent well to the delicate pronunciation of the text.” – Sara

“Those who do not already love the musical may be frustrated with the writing. The story seems to jump around a bit. When Leroux is building suspense, he changes the subject, and comes back a chapter or so later. It’s still a very interesting story. The bottom line is clearly expressed, just as it is in the musical so if you just go with the flow, you’ll probably like it. The narrator does as good a job as I can expect with a difficult narration. Not outstanding, but fine.” – Linda

“The narrator sometimes speaks too fast and with a French accent that it can sometimes be indiscernible. Just a little nitpick I had but it was certainly distracting for me. Other than that, this is a great audiobook that I will definitely recommend to others.” – Anita
