The story revolves around Frederic and Mabel, voiced by Karen Savage and Catherine Eastman, respectively. Frederic is an apprentice under a group of good natured pirates. His apprenticeship lasts until his 21st birthday and he has completed his 21 years with flying colors. Soon enough, he meets a young woman named Mabel who is the daughter of Major General Stanley.
Quickly falling in love with each other, the two encounters a little monkey wrench that throws into their plans into disarray. When Frederic discovers that his birthday is on the 29th of February, a leap year, which means he is technically not 21 years old yet. By law, this means that he actually still has 63 years of apprenticeship to complete. Honor bound by his duty, Frederic decides to return to finish his apprenticeship with the promise that he will return to Mabel after 63 years. With Mabel’s promise that she will wait for him, Frederic, with a heavy heart, returns to being an apprentice.
This is a unique audiobook recording with a talented group of performers. It’s definitely a worthwhile listen with its silly story and endearing characters.
