The Plagiarist: A Novella Audio Book Summary:
The Plagiarist is an interesting take on the world of virtual reality and the dangers of such a world filled with simulated character can be to the human mind when left unchecked. The story centers on Adam Griffey, a mild mannered literature teacher by day and a cyber thief at night. To be more precise, he steals virtual texts he finds in the simulated world and brings them back to the real world to make a profit. His brilliant mind prowls these simulated worlds looking for the next big thing and once he finds one, he memorizes it word for word.
However, what happens when the virtual world starts to appear as more real than his world? What happens when he finds himself more attached to the people in this virtual world than his real life? The most important question would be what if you fall in love with a virtual person who basically does not exist? These are the questions that Adam must answer and in the end, learn to live with.
One reason to listen:
The Plagiarist is a smart science fiction novella that also asks the question of what is real to us. This is akin to The Matrix but at a more personal and emotional level.

Reactions:
“Not only is the plot exciting, but for such a short story (58 pages in the 99¢ ebook, 1.5 hours for the $2 audiobook) there’s a lot to think about: online dating; how spending time in virtual worlds might affect our real lives and relationships; parallel universes; the meaning of art; the way that rapidly advancing technology has led to information overload, mass consumerism, and perhaps a decline (or at least an inability to recognize) genuine talent. And there’s more that I don’t want to tell you about so as not to ruin the plot.” – Katherine

“Now here’s a short story with a blend of good writing and editing combined with a liberal dose of imagination and an added peppering of true love, the resulting concoction being oh-so-enjoyable on the palette. Short and sweet, this one transports you to another reality; and although being somewhat predictable, it leaves you thinking. A solid 4 star read.” – Amazon Customer

“Hugh Howey did it again! This is a great short story – there’s so much emotion, I was so fully immersed in the character and his world, and the ending crept up on me, but was so perfect! I would recommend this book – and really, anything by Howey – to anyone who likes a good story.” – Rachel

“The Plagiarist tells a story based on computer simulations that allow the user to “jack in” and explore computer created worlds. That idea in itself isn’t too terribly original but how our protagonist Adam spends his time in the virtual world is. This is definitively worth a buck.” – Grimace73

“This was a great short story. This is one that I voraciously read because I simply loved the subject matter. As I was reading it gave me such a “What if?” kind of feel to it. And the ending just blew me away.” – Hippie Poet
