The Scarlet Pimpernel is an adventure novel that is set during Reign of Terror that happened after the French Revolution. The story revolves around the alter ego of The Scarlet Pimpernel named Sir Percy Blakeney. Blakeney is an Englishman who is a member of society’s elite. However, he has a secret alter ego known as The Scarlet Pimpernel, a rouge vigilante who is a formidable swordsman and a master escape artist.

The Scarlet Pimpernel is the precursor to the popular “hero with an alter ego” genre that inspired characters like Zorro and, of course, Batman.
