The Shadow of What Was Lost – The Licanius Trilogy, Book 1 Audio Book Summary:
The world has finally found peace. Two decades has passed since the Great War that changed the course of history. Two decades since the last of the Augurs were overthrown from their thrones. The Augurs were dictatorial beings that were once thought of to be Gods among men. However, during the rebellion their once feared powers inexplicably vanished. Those who ruled under the Augurs, men and women who themselves possess magical abilities, albeit at a lesser form, known as Gifts were able to survive the downfall of their masters by submitting themselves to the Four Tenets.
These laws are written into the flesh of anyone who can use the Gift which forces them into absolute obedience or face the repercussions. A young student of the Gifted named Davian carries this burden that befell him for crimes that were made before he was born. Shunned by everyone outside the school walls, he is simply a prisoner within the school walls that teaches him how to control his powers. Davian himself appears to be not as talented in controlling his gift which further causes problems for himself. However, everything will change when Davian discovers that he can tap into the powers of the Augurs.
This discovery sets into motion events that will once again shake the very foundations of his world and everyone in it. To the North, something foreboding begins to awaken, and to the West a man whose fate is connected to Davian’s awakens in a forest covered in blood with no recollection of who he is. The chess pieces are falling in place and a dangerous game is about to begin.

Reactions:
“Listening to the Audible version. Very good. I was a fan of Robert Jordan for the first few books in his wheel of time series. However, I dropped it after he went the way of spending pages and pages describing people eating dinner. This book has the feel of those first few I loved so much. I hope he keeps it up.” – Carter M

“All three heroes are engaging, resourceful and personable. They are at least as interesting and companionable as the heroes gathered up in “The Eye of the World”. And the whole Augur/Gifted/Essence thing is interesting and well crafted without being massively complicated.” – Pop Bop

“This book is quite easily the best debut work I have ever had the pleasure to read. Never once in all of these chapters did I feel that this was a debut book from a brand new author. The story, the plot, the world, the characters, every element of this book felt masterfully crafted by a true master of the story telling craft.”– Phil

“This may be a great book. The reviews certainly indicate so. But I could NOT handle the narration on the Audible version. He ends far too many sentences with a dramatic drop in pitch on the last syllable of the last word.” – Jazmaan

“The writing flows smoothly, the grammar stays sharp with no errors that I could easily discern, and the tome itself is quite dense, clocking in at almost 700 Kindle pages. I read the book in one sitting and needless to say, I was quite bleary-eyed at work today.” – Q
