Audio book Summary:

Dive into the two classic cosmic horror tales from H.P. Lovecraft with “The Shadow over Innsmouth and Dago”. The Shadow over Innsmouth tells the tale of an old decrepit town that is populated by strange looking individuals. The tale follows a student as he tours Innsmouth with its history of strange riots that plagued the town during the last century. As he spends more time investigating Innsmouth, the town’s folk continue to act strangely around him. Unbeknownst to him, time is running out as an evil cosmic entity looms over the town once again.

Dagon is a short story recounting the story of a morphine addicted man as he contemplates suicide due to his experiences during World War 1. What could possibly have happened during his travels as a merchant marine that utterly destroyed his psyche to the point of suicide?

Reactions:

“I have read these stories before, more than once, but I have to say that I think I enjoyed them more now when I listened to them. Wayne June brings the story to life in a way that I didn’t get when I read it. I think more of the spookiness became clear and the story becomes more alive in audiobook form, I now long to take part in more of Lovecraft’s magnificent world. It’s pleasing since I didn’t see myself going through them all again but now I will.” – Johannes

“This is an excellent representation of Lovecraft’s work. Unfortunately, that includes the fact that Lovecraft often draws the story out so that some of the tension leaches away, and Shadow is an excellent example. A good, chilling story, but the story takes about a half an hour to end, after the dramatic climax. That said, the story is still very good, and is excellently read.” – Allan Winterrowd

“Once again Wayne June makes the transformation of Lovecraft’s characters from skeptic to broken – or inspired – believer sound plausible, his dry tone dampening Lovecraft’s excesses while underlining his strengths. I especially like his handling of New England dialect.” – David

“For some reason I like Lovecraft now and then for an absorbing tale. But if you’ve read him, you know you can get totally tangled up with the never-ending sentences and paragraphs. But what makes this story so good is the narration. Because the narrator reads the characters in different-sounding voices and accents, you can keep up! I can honestly say I’ve never heard such a captivating telling of a story! At first when the deep voice of the narrator came on, I thought I wasn’t going to like it. But I think you would agree it is perfect for a Lovecraft tale.” – Kathy

“I’m a Lovecraft fan and I’ve heard many audio versions of these stories from all sorts of illustrious actors – but Mr. June’s reading is for me, the DEFINITIVE version of the tales. Excellent!” – Andrew
