The Tavern Knight is one of Rafael Sabatini’s first works and follows the titular Tavern Knight: Sir Crispin Galliard. The Tavern Knight is sworn to protect the King of England from would be enemies and that comes in the form of Oliver Cromwell and his Puritan Entourage.

Sir Crispin Galliard has a rather broken reputation amongst his peers, hence, his name as the Tavern Knight for his nightly visits to whet his thirst for booze. But unforeseen events led to a chance at redemption as the Puritan Entourage attacks, he is able to save Charles II and lead him to safety. Now, Oliver Cromwell and Sir Crispin Sabatini are at a collision course with each other and the question remains, who will fortune favor in this fated duel.
