The Whites: A Novel Audio Book Summary:
This American crime fiction written by one of the country’s premier novelist, Richard Pryce is a nail biting affair that can only be done justice with top-notch performance in an audiobook.
The story starts with the heydays of Billy Graves in the mid 90’s as he worked with an anticrime unit known as the Wild Geese. Unfortunately, his name became infamous when he fatally shot a 10 year old boy while trying to stop a cocaine fueled lunatic in the street. This incident left him with reputation that shunned him from the public and left his career at the gutter with the higher ups. For almost two decades Graves endured a dead end job but was eventually promoted to sergeant of the Manhattan Night Watch, a group of detectives that are charged to answer nighttime crimes from Wall Street to Harlem.
His relatively quiet days are shattered when he responds to a murder in Penn Station. There he discovers that the victim was once a suspect of an unsolved murder case that happened during his time in the Wild Geese and clues leads him to believe that his former team mates might be involved.
Now, Graves is once again thrown into the blender as his past comes knocking back and threatening to destroy what’s left of his life.
One reason to listen:
Richard Pryce knows how to create tension and mystery in a way that will hold your attention to the very end of the credits.

Reactions:
“I finished it feeling like I just walked away from in interstate pile-up, dazed and reeling. It’s not a bad book and some people will love it, particularly those who prefer things to develop meticulously, in a gritty and depressing landscape, featuring flawed characters who are angst-ridden, but it just wasn’t to my taste.” – Timothy J. McCarthy

“The Whites is mostly about life as a cop and what they have gone through and how the past comes to haunt them in the present. It is a very good story and well worth reading but as I stated above I found it to be a bit slow in the beginning due to multiple story lines going on at the same time. It does come together nicely and it does keep your interest. Just wish it would have grasped me from the beginning.” – J. Stroh

“I had to force myself to stick with The Whites to the end. Not because there’s anything wrong with the novel or Richard Price’s writing – which is IMO masterful – but because I prefer crime/police/detective novels that are faster paced and more tightly focused (e.g., with fewer characters) than The Whites.” – Jim

“So if non-stop drama is your thing, this probably won’t be your cup of tea, either. All of which means that it did fall into my sweet spot: Price/Brandt is a skilled wordsmith, with an observant eye and a flair for bringing (most of) his characters vividly to life.” – S McGee

“I highly recommend The Whites, but be careful when you pick it up; you’re likely to find yourself losing sleep and missing meals. It’s a very hard one to put down.” – Aderyn
