The Woman in Black Audio Book Summary:

Eel Marsh is a house that is plagued with dark secrets. This lonely house is in the middle of an unpredictable salt marsh that rises with the tide which further isolates the home. However, its dark secrets cannot be contained as something sinister looms over the sleepy town of Nine Lives Causeway. Eel Marsh’s sole resident, a recluse named Mrs. Alice Drablow has recently passed away and a junior solicitor from a London firm is called upon to attend her funeral. Arthur Kipps was chosen for this duty and as he travels towards the decrepit manor he senses something amiss. Something is gnawing at the back of his head and warnings of the residents in the town further piques his curiosity of the house’s dark reputation.

Things escalate when he catches a glimpse of a woman clad in black during the funeral. Dread overwhelms him and the urgent need to leave take hold. Alas, Arthur Kipps must stay as his duty to sort out Mrs. Drablow’s documents is vital. The townsfolk are reluctant to explain what is happening to Kipps but he knows that he must leave this God forsaken house as soon as possible before he encounter the Woman in Black once again.

Reactions:

“The Woman in Black starts peacefully and builds up to a frightening crescendo that will “haunt” you long after you put the book down. All in all, a wonderfully-written ghost story that would appeal to those who find Stephen King’s more lurid and less subtle books a bit distasteful.” – Hillary Miller

“I discovered this really disturbing, truly scary ghost story just in time for Halloween. Shirley Jackson’s “The Haunting of Hill House” is probably the only other novel that terrified me as much as “The Woman in Black” by Susan Hill. Set in Victorian England, this atmospheric, supernatural tale of evil, terror and revenge sent chills down my spine on more than one occasion.” – Jana L. Perskie

“You feel for Arthur Kipps in his trials and tribulations dealing with the Woman in Black in Eeel Marsh House. All in all, a wonderful ghost story that seems as if it should’ve been written by Jane Austen.” – Beowulf

“The writing was beautiful and vividly creepy and definitely manages to get under your skin even though the real scary parts don’t even start till the latter half of the book. The descriptions were spot on and the whole book is simply eerie even though, in thinking back to it, nothing real huge actually happens. Nevertheless I was frightened enough to have to ask my boyfriend to walk upstairs with me to our darkened bedroom after I was finished.” – Miss Bonnie

“No neat and tidy endings here, folks. Just strap yourselves in for a great ghost story, complete with nighttime hauntings galore. This is one of those stores that might keep you up at night, just envisioning everything again and again. The author does a great job of making the reader feel like he or she is there with this young attorney – suffering through the whole thing.” – AJ
