Two Years and Four Months in a Lunatic Asylum by Hiram Chase (Free Audio Book)
Two Years and Four Months in a Lunatic Asylum by Hiram Chase – A free audiobook
Narrated by Elaine Webb
Two Years and Four Months in a Lunatic Asylum is exactly what you think it is. Hiram Chase is a reverend in small town Utica and was generally well-liked in the area. However, when his physical and mental health starts to deteriorate due to old age he was sent to the Utica lunatic asylum. This is the free audiobook edition of his journal in which he detailed the depressing state of mental asylums during the 1800’s.
He notes that most of the patients there were not even mentally unfit but are merely old, depressed or a bit eccentric. Mental health asylums before were merely dumping grounds for people that were sometimes not wanted or different. His journal helped in creating the foundations for the betterment of future mental hospitals by shining a spotlight on the malpractices done in these institutions before the advancements in psychology.
