Vera, a novel written by Elizabeth von Arnim and published on 1921 is a black comedy that is actually based on von Armin’s unsuccessful second marriage to Earl Russell. This is a scathing analysis on the romantic delusions that some women have and how some agree to their husband’s autocracy in hopes of actually living this romantic dream.

The story tells the tale of naïve Lucy Entwhistle who is tied into marriage by a wealthy widower named Everard Wemyss. Soon Lucy finds herself in her new husband’s mansion called The Willows. After a few unexplainable incidences, Lucy comes to the conclusion that the mansion is haunted by the spirit of Wemyss’ dead wife Vera. Lucy becomes obsessed in discovering the truth behind his new husband as well as the reasons for Vera’s death. Elizabeth von Arnim crafts a vision of the darker side of marriage but weaves in her signature wit, which in turn develops the story into its own critic of marriage in this classic black comedy.
