Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West Audio Book Summary:

This re-imagining of the classic The Wizard of Oz puts the Wicked Witch of the West front and center and tells the story from her perspective. Instead of the standard good and evil trope, Wicked blurs the line with a well-balanced and crafted tale from the point of view of the so-called bad guy or in this case, bad girl.

Elphaba was always an outcast from birth due to her green skin. However, Elphaba has a talent for magic and a highly intelligent mind. She appears to have found a place for herself in the University at Emerald City and she finally gets to showcase her skills and be admired by her peers she slowly discovers that Oz may not be the perfect world it claims to be. She must now set out to protect fellow outcasts wherein she will become known as the Wicked Witch of the West.

Reactions:

“I listened to this book in the unabridged MP3 edition (which contains 2 CDs) on my MP3 CD player, and I couldn’t wait to get back into it every time I had to stop listening. The author tells a creepy yet strangely touching story about Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and how she got to be the person that we know from the movie and Baum’s books.” – Gen of North Coast Gardening

“I’ve been listening to the audiobook and am utterly enchanted by McDonough’s narration and by the details of the story itself. Everything is described in detail, but it’s not at all in a tedious way — it’s beautiful, sweet, witty, and creates a fully-developed picture in my head.” – A. Beaupre “BA Big Apple”

“I’ve already read this book and love it! I bought the audiobook so that I could listen to it while driving for my job (which I do a lot of as a courier). It’s been great and I’ve even let some coworkers borrow it. They loved it as well. It is worth the money, absolutely. It is also great to listen to while doing other things, instead of mindless television background noise.” – Danielle Newton

“First, John McDonough does an excellent job with the audiobook, and in my opinion makes Gregory MaGuire’s take on the land of OZ and the West Witch’s story as interesting as it could be. However the book overall just seems to suffer a marked lack of action, for lack of a better word.” – JP

“There was a description given that just thoroughly turned me off having to do with the time clock and an incestuous sexual imagining/accusation used to incite people to violence against a family. This was not an image or idea I wanted in my mind while drifting off to sleep. I do think that creating an alternate story for The Wizard of Oz was a fantastic idea, and the story that the author did create in Wicked is a good one.” – Mary Ann Vorasky
