You Are One of Them Audio Book Summary:

“You Are One of Them” is the story of best friends Jennifer Jones and Sarah Zuckerman who lives in the upscale part of Washington, DC during the politically charged 1980’s. Jennifer is your classic all-American girl with the perfect looking parents while Sarah is a shy girl who grew up in a broken home when his father abandoned them to return back to England. As the Cold War reaches its peak during the early 1980’s and paranoia grips the two nations, Sarah and Jenny sends a letter to Soviet Union premier Yuri Andropov asking him for peace but only Jenny received a reply from the Soviet premier asking her to visit Russia. Sarah and Jenny’s relationship turn sour which only got worse due to the media coverage of Jenny. Unfortunately, Jenny and her family dies in a plane crash in 1985, the two former best friends were never given the chance to patch up their relationship.

10 years later, Sarah is about to graduate college when she receives a letter from Moscow which hints that Jenny’s death may have been fabricated. Sarah travels to Russia to find out the truth about her former best friend but she will soon find herself tangled in a web of lies and deceit. Will she be able to find the truth and get back a treasured friend?

One reason to listen:

“You Are One of Them” is a taut and enthralling tale of losing a person you love and being given the chance to get them back. Elliott Holt writes a very intriguing story that will surely pique the heartstrings of its listeners.

Reactions:

“Equally beautifully created is a story of the friend-left-behind who is navigating the alien world of the USSR, where truth and propaganda constantly shift boundaries, where the boundaries sometimes overlap with our own battles with truth and propaganda, and where no one can ever be sure that what they believe is what truly has happened. The author is so comfortable in her knowledge of the USSR that she sometimes drops the threads of the first story, instead of seamlessly interweaving those threads.” – Jil I. Shtulman

“The character development is mixed, and this is one area I expect to Holt improve in future books. Sarah’s narrative voice is strong and distinct, and gives the reader a clear picture of who she is on the inside, but the actual scenes do little to throw her personality into relief. So, for instance, we see a lot of her loneliness and feeling that everyone abandons her, and her intelligence and self-consciousness come through clearly.” – E. Smiley

“I highly recommend YOU ARE ONE OF THEM. This book has something for everybody. The writing is sure and solid, the characters are REAL, the events, well, and they are based on fact. Author Elliott Holt did her homework and serves up Russia and her people on a silver platter. I absolutely loved the conversations held in the USSR between Sarah and her new acquaintances.” – Pamela A. Poddany

“I like dual story lines, but I thought the narrative in this case (between the early 1980’s and mid 1990’s) was sloppily executed and unbalanced. Still, it’s worth reading if you’re interested in post-Cold War Russia and the “glasnost” (openness) and “perestroika” (new political system) culture of the 1990’s.” – Rhonda Filipan

“There was some debate among my friends about the ending but I liked that the author left it up and the air and for you to determine what is what. Overall, I surprisingly enjoyed it and would recommend it to others.” – Abiddings
