Description

While Jane Austen mainly started get recognition after publishing her two most famous novels (“Pride and Prejudice” and “Sense and Sensibility”) Northanger Abbey was one of the first novels that she completed for publication. Northanger Abbey was written by Jane Austen during 1798 – 1799 and was revised for publication in 1803. It was originally titled Susan but was then changed to Northanger Abbey when it was posthumously released in December of 1817 a few months after Austen’s death.

It focuses on 19 year old protagonist Catherine Morland who is described as a “tomboy” and somewhat of an adventurous spirit. It follows her journey to maturity as she finds out both heartbreakingly and fondly that real life is far more difficult than what she reads in her favorite novels.

Northanger Abbey is another free audiobook that was read wonderfully by voice actress Elizabeth Klett. She transitions between narration and character performance seamlessly. From the changes she does with her accent to her very clear line delivery, this free audiobook adaptation of Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey benefited greatly from the performance of its reader. While there are certainly some nitpicks I have with this audiobook it has nothing to do with the voice acting performance but the audio quality recording in some chapters. About halfway through the audiobook some chapters had a very noticeably weaker audio even at full volume, that being said everything else is just top notch. Do yourself a favor and download this audiobook especially if you are a fan of Jane Austen’s work.
